Mechanism of action

A

Pharmacological: second most plentiful intracellular cation; Essential to enhance intracellular potassium replenishment and activity of many enzymes; important role in neurochemical transmission and muscular excitability (May decrease acetylcholine released by nerve impulses)
Decreases my cardio irritability and neuromuscular irritability

Clinical: cardiac-reduces ventricular irritability, especially when associate it with hypo magnesemia, Inhibition of muscular excitability

Indications

A
Torsades de pointes 
Hypomagnesemia
Preterm labor
Pregnancy induced hypertension( PIH, toxemia of pregnancy, preeclampsia and or eclampsia
Hyper active airway – severe asthma

Contraindications

A

Hyper magnesemia

Used cautiously in patients with impaired renal function and pre-existing heart blocks

Precautions: caution when use with barbiturates, narcotics, or other hypnotics in conjunction with magnesium sulfate do to addictive sensual depressive effects of magnesium
