11
Q

Would would happen if you placed, for example, iron into a magnetic field?

A

The iron will experience a force of attraction towards the magnet.
The strength of this magnetic field depends on the distance from the magnet, if its further away there is less attraction.

12
Q

What happens when a current flows through a conducting wire?

A

A magnetic field is produced around the wire.

The field is made up of concentric circles, perpendicular to the wire in the centre.

13
Q

How can you work out the direction of the field using the direction of the current?

A

Using the right hand thumb rule

Point thumb in the direction of the current and curls fingers, direction of fingers is direction of the field

16
Q

When we turn on the current in a solenoid we get a _____ and _______ magnetic field inside the solenoid.

A

Strong

And uniform

17
Q

A solenoid is an example of what…?

A

An electromagnetic

18
Q

What do transformers do and how do they work?

A

Transformers use induction to change the size of the potential difference of an ALTERNATING current

19
Q

Name the two coils of wire on a transformer

A

Primary (L)

Secondary (R)

20
Q

Which side has more coils for

A) a step up transformer

B) a step down transformer

A

A) more coils on secondary coil

B) more coils on the primary coil

21
Q

The primary and secondary coils are completely ________ and are both wrapped around an ______ core - which is easily ___________

A

Separate

Iron

Magnetised

22
Q

Which coil is connected to the alternating current?

23
Q

Describe and explain the flow of current and magnetic field in a transformer

A

As the current flows through the primary coil it generates a changing magnetic field, which is transmitted along the iron core and passes through a secondary coil, this induces a potential difference AND the wire experiences a force.

24
Q

How do you determine the motion of the force on a current-carrying conductor?

A

FLEMINGS LEFT HAND RULE:

  1. place thumb, first finger and second finger so they are at right angles
  2. First finger= direction of magnetic field from north to south (F -> field
  3. Second finger = direction of current (seCond -> current)
  4. Thumb = DIRECTION OF THE MOTION or force ( thuMb -> motion)
25
What is the equation for the motor effect? USING CURRENT, LENGTH, MAGNETIC FLUX DENSITY and FORCE
Force= magnetic flux density x current x length
26
What is magnetic flux density?
How many field (flux) lines there are in a region - showing the strength of the magnetic field.
