Magnets and electricity Flashcards
(20 cards)
What are the two ends of a magnet called?
Poles
North and south poles
Give an example of one magnetic material and one non-magnetic material.
Iron and stone.
Opposite poles
Attract
Similar poles
Repel
Magnets
Can attract and repel other magnets
Magnetic
Attracted to magnets
Non magnetic
Magnets have no effect
What is a magnetic field
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet in which a magnet (or magnetic material) will experience a force.
Where does a magnetic field line start
Each field line starts at a north pole and points towards a south pole.
We know that there are three metals that are naturally magnetic:
Iron
Cobalt
Nickel
What is a compass made of?
Free-spinning magnet.
What is the north pole of a compass attracted to?
Geographic North (which is a magnetic south pole).
Where does a compass point: geographic north or magnetic north?
Geographic north.
Electromagnets advantages
They can be turned on and off.
Their strength can be varied by changing:
Electromagnets disadvantages
They must have a continuous power supply.
To be effective, they need an iron core, which is heavy.
What is current
Rate of flow of charge
What factors affect the current
Voltage of supply (push) components in a circuit (resistance)
How is current measured
Using a ammeter
