Maintaining curiosity Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is component knowledge?
The overall knowledge/ elements needed to be able to complete a task. All the areas in which you need to understand to be able to carry out and complete a task.
What is composite knowledge ?
this is when all the elements are put together to complete the overall task
What is substantive knowledge?
Everything related to one specific activity/ability. Knowledge produced by a specific subject.
What is disciplinary knowledge?
this is how we gain the overall knowledge
What do you think good practice in science teaching and learning looks like?
Hands on learning Testing the theory and knowledge Pupil led learning Investigative learning Embedded learning -> constantly going back over what was previously taught
What may be the problem with a curriculum that focuses only on substantive knowledge?
If it was all based on substantive knowledge, the children would not understand the components behind the overall task, meaning that they could not apply their skills elsewhere.
Pupils learn the facts behind, but are unaware of how this knowledge developed and became accepted. This leads to pupils developing a naive understanding of status of scientific knowledge
What may be the problem with a curriculum that focuses only on disciplinary knowledge (working scientifically)?
The children would not develop an understanding of an understanding of the overall topics, instead they will just develop a knowledge of the specific components without putting them together
How can teachers encourage enthusiasm and natural curiosity in children?
