DSM Criteria

A
  1. 5 or more of symptoms must be present during the same 2 week period; at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure: depressed mood; diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities; weight loss when not dieting or weight gain; insomnia or hypersomnia nearly everyday; psychomotor agitation or retardation; fatigue or loss of energy nearly everyday; feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt; diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness; thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation w/o a specific plan OR suicide attempt OR a specific plan for suicide
  2. impairment in life due to symptoms
  3. not attributed to substances or a medical issue
  4. not better explained by another mental illness
  5. no evidence of manic episode or a hypomania episode
