Major Themes of Biology, Scientific inquiry, Water Flashcards
(21 cards)
what is the experimental group?
group being exposed to the independent variable
what is the control group?
when you know the outcome
negative control
positive control
What is a negative control?
no treatment is given
what is a positive control group?
when a treatment is given and you know the outcome
what is the independent variable?
treatment being induced
I am doing the change
what is the dependent variable?
what is being measured
what is the control variable?
all aspect that are kept constant
What is an ion?
it loses of gains an electron
what is a polar molecule?
unequally shares electrons
what is a hydrogen bond?
when there is an attraction between partially charged molecules
What is water?
-polar
-h is partially positive
-o is partially negative
-hydrogen bonds
-universal solvent
-life depends on water
-
what is the solvent?
the dissolvent agent (usually water)
What is a solute?
something that dissolves
what is aqueous?
the dissolving solvent is water
what dissolves?
something that is not covalent so ionic and polar things dissolve
what is hydrophilic?
loves water
what is hydrophilic?
- loves water
- polar
- has hydrogen (partially positive), nitrogen and oxygen (partially negative)
Whats is hydrophobic?
fears water
- non polar
- hydrocarbon compounds (O2)
what four properties do hydrogen bonds give water?
- cohesive and adhesion behavior
- moderation temperature (meaning it can fluctuate btw temps w/out anything crazy happening)
- solid form is less dense
- versatile solvent (anything can pretty much dissolve in it)
what is cohesion?
- water molecules stick to itself
ex: suface tension
what is adhesion?
sticks to another polar molecule
