Making salts Flashcards
(4 cards)
Which experiment is used to produce soluble salt from an acid and an insoluble reagant?
Heat acid
Keep adding base till no more dissolves and stir
Filter out excess base
Transfer to evaporating basin
Heat using bunsen burner until crystals start to form on glass rod
Leave solution to cool
Filter off crystals
Pat dry with filter paper
Which experiment is used to produce an insoluble salt (a precipitate) from two soluble reagants?
Dissolve solids in water
Mix solutions to produce precipitate
Filter out salt precipitate
Rinse salt with distilled water
Dry in oven
Which experiment is used to prepare a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt starting from an acid and an (soluble) alkali?
Perform a titration to measure the volume of acid and alkali that neutralise each other
Repeat the titration but don’t use indicator and use the burette to add exactly the right volume
Heat salt solution until crystals start to form on glass rod
Allow solution to cool in evaporating basin for a few days
Filter out the crystals
Dry the crystals with filter paper
What are the 3 different combinations of salts?
Insoluble and soluble (usually acid) regents to produce a soluble salt
Two soluble regents to produce an insoluble salt (precipitation)
Two soluble regents (acid and alkali) to produce a soluble salt
