Q
9 Steps
Explain the method used when making copper sulphate crystals from copper oxide and dilute sulfuric acid?
Include words such as: Beaker, Heatproof mat, Gauze, Tripod, Bunsen Burner, Spatula, Stirring Rod, Filter Paper, Funnel, Conical Flask, Evaporating Basin, Water Bath
A
- Set up heatproof mat. Place Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze on top. Set beaker on top of gauze.
- Pour 20cm^3 of sulfuric acid into beaker (this will be our limiting reactant) using measuring cylinder
- Add small amount of copper oxide using spatula.
- Stir solution with glass rod (copper will react and seemingly disappear causing solution to turn blue).
- Continue adding copper oxide until some powder remains after stirring (copper oxide is in excess)
- Filter solution into conical flask using filter paper and funnel to remove excess copper oxide.
- Pour solution into evaporating basin and gently heat using water bath. Heat until crystals begin to form
- Leave solution and crystals to cool for 24 hours
- Pat crystals dry
