9 Steps

Explain the method used when making copper sulphate crystals from copper oxide and dilute sulfuric acid?

Include words such as: Beaker, Heatproof mat, Gauze, Tripod, Bunsen Burner, Spatula, Stirring Rod, Filter Paper, Funnel, Conical Flask, Evaporating Basin, Water Bath

A
  1. Set up heatproof mat. Place Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze on top. Set beaker on top of gauze.
  2. Pour 20cm^3 of sulfuric acid into beaker (this will be our limiting reactant) using measuring cylinder
  3. Add small amount of copper oxide using spatula.
  4. Stir solution with glass rod (copper will react and seemingly disappear causing solution to turn blue).
  5. Continue adding copper oxide until some powder remains after stirring (copper oxide is in excess)
  6. Filter solution into conical flask using filter paper and funnel to remove excess copper oxide.
  7. Pour solution into evaporating basin and gently heat using water bath. Heat until crystals begin to form
  8. Leave solution and crystals to cool for 24 hours
  9. Pat crystals dry
