Male Repro Flashcards
What is Fertile ?
Produce healthy sperm to fertalize an agg
What is Potency ?
ability to angage in copulation
What kinds of things cause Testicular Degeneration ?
- Thermal
- Crytorchidism
- Hypoplasia
- Chemical
How does thermal changes causes testicular degeneration ?
- spermatogonia sensitive to heat
=cell degeneration ( pressure atrophy/necrosis)= abnormal sperm
morphology and fxn
How does Crytorchidism cause testicular degeneration?
- congenital lesion
- failure of 1 or both testis to drop ( stay in abd. or inguinal canal)
=do not produce sperm, prone to testicular neoplasia & torsion of speratic cord
What kind of animals have Hypoplasia leading to testicular degen.?
Inherited in bulls
how do chemicals cause testicular degeneration
estrogenic compounds or excess endogenous estrogen production
What causes Malfunction of Sperm ??
The sperm are either?
- Morphologically Normal
- Morphologically Abnormal ( infection or hereditary)
What causes Orchitis ?
Orchitis- inflammation of the testis
- Trauma * common
- Infection ( local or systemic)
What infectious agents ( Bact & viral ) cause orchitis ?
Bact= Brucella, Pseudomonas, Mycobact & Nocardia
Virus = CDV,EVA & EIA
Sterility of a male from Orchitis relates to :
- tubular damage
- increased temp
- pressure atrophy-> necrosis
- bact toxins/cytokine production
- pus mixed with ejac.
- duct blockage
WHAT IS THIS? and what causes it ??
= Sperm Granuloma
-from FB inflammatory rxn to sperm that have escapred tubular structures
( can be seen in epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate)
when it comes to testicular degeneration, testes are usually ___________
smaller then normal
What animals do we usually see testicular neoplasia ?
usually seen in cats & dogs
-lg animals are usually castrated early on
What are the Testicular Tumors we have talked about ?
- Interstitial cell tumor
- Seminomas
- Sertoli cell tumor
- Teratomas
Wht kind of tumor causes this ?
Showing a Interstital Cell Tumor ( Leydig cell tumor)
- most common in dogs *
- may be multiple in testis
- from endocrine cells of interstitium
RARELY CAUSE ENLARGEMENT
( round well demarc. mass, <1cm, pale yellow/brown)
- RARELY MALIGNANT & RARELY HAVE ENDOCRINE EFFECTS
WHAT KIND OF THINGY IS THIS THINGY SHOWING YOU ?
SEMINOMA
=DOES CAUSE BULGING/TESTICULAR ENLARGMENT
- Pale ( tan/yellow/white) & soft
- Rarely Met and no endocrine effect *
What about Seminomas in dogs ?
Seminoma
- have a characteristic appearance in the dog
- have a well circum, white & homogenous mass
- closely resembles neoplastic lymphoid tissue
What do you think this is ?
Seminoma
What do you think of when you see this picture ?
Sertoli Cell tumor
- less common*
- usually unilateral,solitary
* ENLARGES TESTIS ****
- usually has endocrine effects
** Cryptorchoridism is predisposing factor**
What is the pre-disposing factor to Sertoli cell tumor ?
Crytorchidism
What do sertoli cell tumors look like ?
- well demarc, firm, white
- may contain cysts **
- RARELY MET.
