What was apartheid?

A

1945 South Africa

A collection of laws that segregated black people and white people
The laws stated that black people did not have the same rights and opportunities as white people
Apartheid laws meant black people had to leave their home towns

Who was Nelson Mandella?

A

Born 18th July 1918 in South Africa
Wanted all Africans to be treated fairly and equally - didn’t believe in Apartheid laws, thought everyone should be the same, doesn’t matter their skin

Why was Nelson Mandella sent to prison?

A

Because he was gaining so much support from the public for wanting black and white people to be equal - he spent 27 years in prison - the government were worried about all the support he was getting

What happened when Mandella left prison?

A

Apartheid officially came to an end in the early 1990s. A new election was held in 1994 in which people of all colours could vote. Nelson Mandela won the election and became the first black president of South Africa

A

A Nobel Peace Prize - he is known and respected for his courage in fighting for equality and justice and acts as a role model for people all over the world today

Why was Mandella released from prison?

A

Lots of people felt angry with the apartheid laws and with the leaders of South Africa who kept the laws in place - the current president was worried that people would start physically fighting to end apartheid so he released Mandella
