Manipulating Behaviors Flashcards
(6 cards)
reinforcement given to INCREASE (mathematical) likelihood of future behavior by removing something adverse. (giving a child a treat for being well behaved, giving dog a bone for learning new trick)
positive reinforcement (target: what do we want for future?)
reinforcement given to INCREASE (mathematical)
likelihood of future behavior occurring again. (ie. taking away what we don’t like) (man does dishes to stop woman from nagging, child can leave table when broccoli is eaten
negative reinforcement (target: what do we want for future?)
decrease likelihood of behavior in future
punishment
give something undesirable to DECREASE (mathematical) likelihood of behavior in future. (spanking a child, speeding ticket=undesirable)
positive punishment (target: what do we want for future?)
take away something desirable to DECREASE (mathematical) likelihood of behavior in future. (taking car away from teen to punish him, take away cell phone)
negative punishment (target: what do we want for future?)
to tie undesirable task with desirable activity (getting homework done = watch a movie, clean your room = go to park)
