Iago pretends to warn Othello about his jealousy while actually encouraging it. His description of jealousy as self destructive subtly pushes Othello towards paranoia, making him easier to manipulate.
“I am not what I am” Act 1 scene 1
Iago reveals his deceptive nature links to religious scripture “I am what I am” portraying himself as an evil person
“I follow him to serve my turn upon him” Act 1 scene 1
Iago’s trait as a Machiavellian is seen as he’s willing to manipulate anyone to achieve his aims.
“Knavery’s plain face is never seen till used” Act 2 scene 2
Iago paints himself as a self serving deceiver and reinforces the theme of appearance vs reality.
“If I can fasten one cup upon him” Act 2 scene 3
Iago knows Cassio will lose control and act reckless- he understands if he acts out of place it will damage his reputation and make him vulnerable to further deception.
“With as little a web I will ensnare as great a fly as Cassio” Act 2 scene 1
Highlights Iago’s manipulative nature- he sees Cassio as an unsuspecting prey, easily caught in his deceit
“Farewell the tranquil mind/ i’ll tear her all to pieces” Act 3 scene 3
Othello reaches his peripeteia due to him fully convinced that Desdemona is having an affair which begins Othello’s now irreversible descent into jealousy and chaos has now replaced order which was present in Venice. Here we ultimately see the violent Othello Iago describes him as in act 1.
“I will chop her into messes” Act 4 scene 1
Iago has now manipulated Othello into a jealous fit and is fully convinced Desdemona is guilty and vows to kill her.
“My heart is turned to stone” Act 4 scene 1
Othello no longer bears any feeling or sympathy towards Desdemona showing his shift from noble hero to heartless villain at the actions of Iago’s manipulation.
“Every way makes my gain” Act 5 scene 1
Ultimately we see here Iago portrayed as a Machiavellian villain due to him outlining that he would do whatever it takes to bring about Othello’s downfall regardless of who is harmed in the process.
