Q

What is Subtractive manufacturing and examples?

A

> Subtractive manufacturing is a process that involves removing material from a solid block.
Examples: Water jetting, laser cutting, CNC machining (turning and milling).

Q

What is additive manufacturing? and example?

A

> Is an automated fabrication process that creates the desired shape by adding material, preferably by staggering contoured layers on top of each other from CAD without need of any tool, jig or fixture. (Builds objects layer by layer).
Example would be Material Extrusion (FDM or MEX- 3D printing - where hot material from fine nozzle is deposited in layers on top of each other to print an object).

Q

What are the two fundamental rules for dimensioning:

A

> The size and location of every feature on the part must be fully defined.
You cannot have any extra or redundant dimensions besides the minimum required to fully define every feature on the part.

Q

Reasons why CAD is used in product development:

A

> Greater quality: and accuracy during detail design with fewer errors than 2D drawing.
Increased confidence: in component and assembly design (can be checked, analysed and reviewed thoroughly).
Rapid modifications: changes with alterations to 3D models automatically updating 2D drawings.
Rapid generation: of BOMs and data outsourced to production planning.
Design integrity: is maintained as the same CAD data can be reused and remains dimensionally accurate, no matter how often or where used.
3D CAD reduces the duplication: had common parts stored in standard part library as well as downloading bought-out 3D parts.
Dramarically improved communication: Ability to conveniently share digital info with other departments within business and outsource to suppliers & other stake holders.
