1
Q

What is product design & development?

A

> Process of creating new products or improving existing ones to meet user needs and business goals.
It involves researching user needs, generating ideas, prototyping, testing and refining designs to create functional and appealing products.

Q

Constraints and limitations in Product design & development? (there’s seven of them)

A

> Technical constraints: how product’s tech stack and engineering team limit design.
Financial contraints: departmental and project budgets.
Legal and regulatory constraints: laws design teams must follow.
Organisational constraints: culture, structure, policies, bureaucracy.
Self-imposed constraints: each designer’s workflow and creative decision-making.
Talent contraints: designer skills, experience and professional shortcomings.
Project-specific constraints: limitations relating to project, including time, budget, available team members and etc.

Q

What is a model?

A

Tends to lend itself to the aesthetics side of things, used to demonstrate look and feel.

Q

What is a prototype?

A

> More geared towards testing to see if the final piece will work as intended.
Whether that is it’s physical size, geometry or function.

Q

Explain stages of product development

A

> The product development stage consists of developing the product concept into a finished, marketable product.
This stage involves creating the prototype, testing it with users to see how they interact with it and collect feedback.
Prototype testing allows product teams to validate design decisions and uncover any flaws or usability issues before handing the designs to development team.
(Say about model and prototype here too).

Q

For the four types of aspects, say the different between model and prototype.

A

Aspect: Purpose
Model - Visual/aesthetic representation
Prototype - Functionality and performance testing

Aspect: Detail/Realism
Model - May be non-functional, focus on form
Prototype - Often functional, closer to final product

Aspect: Testing
Model - Rarely used for testing
Prototype - Used for evaluation and iterative improvement

Aspect: Stage/Cost
Model - Early design, lower cost
Prototype - Later stage, higher cost and complexity

Q

What is concept design and development process and how can it be achieved?

A

> The process involves progressing initial sketches and proposals through to proving prototypes and resolved mechanical designs.
Can be achieved through further development of sketches, 2D CAD, 3D CAD models, soft models/mechanical test rigs and prototypes.
