Why do we use map symbols and not words?

A

It makes the maps clearer to read and there wouldn’t be enough space to write everything down

How to read a 4 figure grid reference?

A

Start at the bottom left corner and go straight up, that is your first two numbers. If you go straight right, that is your last two numbers.

How to read 6 figure grid references?

A

First find the 4 figure grid reference, and leave a space after every 2 number, like this: 6145. Then, image there are ten squares along each side of the box, estimate/measure how far up this is and write the number in the first space. Then do the same but going across (right) the box and write the number in the last space.
