Rocks Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the three types of rocks?
Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
How are igneous rocks formed?
When magma cools down.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
when rocks are compressed (usually underwater)
How are Metamorphic rocks formed?
Rocks change formation and stretch out due to weathering.
Where are most igneous rocks found?
Northern Scotland in the highlands
Where are most sedimentary rocks found?
Southeast England mostly, in a body of water.
Where are most metamorphic rocks found?
Northwest Wales and southern Scotland 500m-1000m in height.
What are the steps of freeze-thawing?
- Water gets into the cliff-face
- water freezes where temperatures fluctuate
- the cracks open up wider as the water freezes
- stresses are create in the rock and overtime widens and the rock falls to pieces
What the steps to carbonation?
- rainwater mixes with carbon dioxide
- Rain water becomes a weak carbonic acid
- The acid attacks alkaline rocks
4.the rock is dissolved and weakened over time
Which area will have more resistant rocks (highlands or lowlands)?
Highlands, as they have been there longer and eroded less.
