What are the different types of Grid Systems
Alphanumeric Grid Map Grid(military grid) Latitude and longitude
What is an alphanumeric grid
The alphanumeric Grid uses letters and numerals to identify squares in a grid pattern. An alphanumeric grid is often used in road maps. Grid squares are identifies by a letter along one edge of the map and a number along another.
Military Grid 4 digit
The numbers on the vertical grid lines increase as you go from west to east. As a result, they are called easting numbers. The number refers not only to the vertical grid line, but also to the column to the right of the other grid line. The numbers of the horizontal grid lines increase from the south to the north. As a result, they are called northern numbers.
Military Grid six digit
There are times when we want to give a more exact location than is possible with a four-digit reference. Each side of a grid square can be divided into tenths.
Latitude and longitude
A third type of grid system divides the world into a series of grid squares using lines of latitude and longitude. NO matter were you are in the world, your location can be identified by a latitude and longitude “address”

line scale
A special ruler that is divided into units of distance.
Ex. String, thumb edge of paper
Representative Fraction
An RF is a ratio and is shown as follows: 1:50 000. This RF scale means that 1 unit on a map represents 50 000 of the same units on Earth’s surface.
