Why do Catholics disagree with divorce?
Jesus taught it was wrong.
Marriage is a sacrament and so this covenant with God can’t be ‘broken by any earthly power’ like divorce.
The Catechism teaches marriage can’t be dissolved. Because of this, remarriage would mean bigamy and adultery.
What is an annulment?
A statement by the Catholic Church saying a marriage wasn’t true, so the couple can remarry.
Why do non-Catholic churches allow divorce?
Jesus allowed divorce for adultery in Matthew 19.
It could be the lesser of two evils in a broken marriage.
Repentance means that couples can have another chance if the want to make it work.
What do atheists think about divorce and remarriage?
They view marriage as a human institution and so allow divorce. Some atheists don’t believe in marriage, choosing to cohabit instead.
What do Humanists believe about divorce and remarriage?
All married couples have the right to separate. Divorce should ensure the spouses are financially stable and that children are well provided for. The divorced people are then free to remarry.
