(5 cards)
What is the Marxist view on Family?
- A structual perspective, look at how families contribute to the maintanenance of societies structure
- dont see the nuclear family as functionally necessary institution
- see within the framework of a capitalist society
What does Engels say?
That the nuclear family was a means of passing on private property to heirs as it provided proof of paternity so property could be passed onto the right people
What does Althusser say?
In order for a capitalist system to survive, the working class must submit to ruling class. The family is one of the ideological state apparatuses along with education and media. That it is a way to pass on ideas and beliefs of ruling class.
What does Zaretsky say?
Emphasises the ideological role of the family in propping up capitalism.
Sees the family as an escape route from oppression and exploitation at work - especially for male workers who can enjoy personal life and be valued in personal lives and have some control.
What is a criticism of Marxist’s general beliefs?
Tend to be old-fashioned
The idea of men marry and have children to pass of property ignores other reasons for getting married and having a family.
Now many women work and have individual incomes instead of being dependent on men.
So marriage is less of a social necessity.
