Wyatt’s rebellion
causes

-Had been planned in Nov 1553 for 4 simultaneous rising but only kent experienced a serious rising with Thomas Wyatt raising a force of 3000
-Motives
-some religious with supporters coming from a protestant stronghold
-Xenophobia
-Decline in the local cloth industry
-Main grievance was resentment of the proposed royal marriage, especially among the rebellion’s leaders with an implicit objective of getting rid of Mary

events and consequences
-Queen rallies support with a speech at Guildhall, London
-rebels are prevented entering London. Rebels stop at ludgate and wyatt surrenders
-Consequences
-Showed that although protestants were in a minority, their religious opinions could not be ignored
-demonstrated to the extent to which there was popular suspicion of the proposed Spanish marriage
-resulted in Lady Jane Grey’s execution and Elizabeth’s imprisonment

Mary I’s financial reforms
-Lord treasurer Winchester improved financial administration
-The court of the Exchequer took over the court of first fruits and tenths and the court of Augmentations
-Mary remitted Edward’s last subsidy which bought her some cheap popularity but at a financial cost
-Mary enabled efficient implementation under Elizabeth
-The LT security of crown finances was boosted by the plans of recoinage drawn up 1556-1558
-Elizabeth also benefited from Mary’s introduction of a new book of rates in 1558
Economic change under Mary I
-Increasing inflation due to a rapid increase in the population
-Inflationary impact of the debasement of the coinage
-Harvest failures in 1555 and 1556. These brought severe food shortages and strain on real wages for the poor
-Devastating impact of the influenza which swept through the country in 1557 and 1558. The death toll was the worst of the century
