Q
Haemoglobin ‘summary’ = Structure + definition
A
-A protein with a quaternary structure.
-Made up of 4 polypeptide chains (2x alpha, 2x beta)
-Contains a prosthetic group containing an iron ion at the centre of each Poly peptide chain
-Haemoglobin can carry 4 Oxygen molecules which associated with the iron ion (Fe2+)
-The ‘haem’ group gives haemoglobin its red colour

Q
Haemoglobin Stauration
A
-When haemoglobin has loaded oxygen, the blood is said to be saturated
-High conc of oxygen = high partial pressure of oxygen (pO2)
-High conc of Carbon Dioxide = high partial pressure of Carbon Dioxide (pCO2)
