Massage 101 Flashcards
(29 cards)
Two documentation format plans that are used
SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment and plan) and APIE (assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation)
Assessment of pain
O (Onset) ,P (Provocative) P(pallative) Q(quality) R(radiation) S(site) and T(timing)
Founder of Trager, rocking rhythmic movement, uses the term Mentastics(mental gymnastics, the gntle, mindful movement exercises that help the body recall positive physical or mental changes
Milton Trager
Increases blood flow and decreases swelling, relaxes lengthens muscles, softens superficial fascia, stimulates release of endorphins (pain relief), kneading
Petrissage
means to rub
Generates heat and increases circulation
breaks down adhesions
promotes proper scar formation
-across and perpendicular to the muscle fibers
Friction
Cross Friction
tapping,hacking ,cupping,pounding,pinching,diffused
Stimulates nerve endings
Tones atrophied muscles
Accesses deeper structures
Tapotement
Enhances general relaxation and increases circulation
decreases pain in tender and trigger points stimulates synovial fluid enjoy
Vibration
applying lubricant, assessing and exploring surface of underlying tissue
Warming the tissue, calms the system, increases blood and lymph flow.
Effleurage
Localized areas of hyperirritability may refer to sensations to other areas of the body will press are found in the muscle tendon fascia ligament and or pierce them
Trigger points
Point causes pain even at rest
Active trigger points
Point goes unnoticed by the client until pressure is applied
Latent trigger points
The bodies constant migration toward physiological balance
Homeostasis
Protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation
PRICE
Evaluation, conditioning, maintenance
Stages of rehabilitation
The first stage of rehabilitation
begin 72 hours after the injury
obtain physician clearance before treatment on a client
never massage during acute phase when is the swelling eliminate spasm and trigger point activity and address faulty body mechanics
First stage of rehabilitation
Evaluation
Restores flexibility and strength to muscles and joints and rebuild endurance
Second stage conditioning
Address diet, stress and emotional well-being
Third stage maintenance
Pre-event, inter-event, and post events
Stages of sports massage
Focuses on increasing circulation and flexibility usually given 2 hours before an event , usually compression, tapotement, jostling no lubricant used timeframe of 10 to 15 minutes
Pre-event
Occurs between games or events w/in 1-2days; massages with moderate pressure problem areas are just generally and receive attention later; goal is to assist the return of the body to homeostasis, apply the same techniques but no tapotement
Inter-event
Occurs 30 minutes to six hours after the event goal is to reduce soreness and promote faster recovery time, avoid deep pressure, and tapotement because muscles are in a hypersensitive state could spasm, athlete cools down
Post-event
refers to seven energy centers in the body, located along the central channel, ascending from the base of the spine to the head associated with a color, element,a sound,a symbol and other characteristics
