Potholes
Small circular holes or depressions in the bed of a river, usually found in the upper course
Interlocking spurs
A series of ridges of higher ground that protrude into alternate sides of a river valley. They are initiated by the river twisting and turning around the more resilient rock as it’s valley deepens
Estuary
These are funnel shaped river mouths where the tide meets the current of fresh water
River beach
A gentle slope found on the inside of the bend in a meander where the current is slowest

The flag land along either side of a river built up by deposition of alluvium in times of flood

Small horseshoe lakes which were originally meanders
Levees
A natural embankment of course sands and gravels silt and mud formed on either side of the river during repeated flooding
Ria
A long narrow inlet of the sea formed by the drowning of a river valley
