Oceans Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the distance of a wave?
The distance from crest to crest, trough to trough, or from a point in one wave cycle to the corresponding point on the next adjacent wave cycle
Swash
The movement of a breaking wave up a beach
Backwash
The return flow of a wave back towards the sea
Constructive wave
Low frequency 6-8 per minute, strong wash pushes material up the beach, emphasis on deposition
Where does deposition occur?
Waves carry sediment, the currents deposit the sediment near land, creating beaches
Spit
Extended stretch of beach material that projects out to sea and is joined to the main land at one end
Stack
Is geological land form consisting of a steep and often vertical column of rock in the sea near a coast, formed by erosion
What are waves created by?
The wind cause waves on the surface of the ocean. The wind transfers some of its energy to the water through fiction between air molecules and the water molecules
Tombolo
A bar of sand or shingle joining an island in the mainland
What is a RAMSAR wetland?
A landing place for migratory birds
