Material Properties Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is meant by the term impact strength?
Ability of a material to resist a shock or hammering load.
What is meant by the term tensile strength?
The ability of a material to withstand a stretching load without breaking
What is meant by the term compression strength?
Resist a squeezing load without breaking.
What is meant by the term malleability?
Be able to be deformed by compressive load without damage, and retain its new shape.
What is meant by the term fusibility?
The ease of which a material will melt
What is meant by the term creep?
Continuous increase in deformation of a material under steady load. Evident in materials with low melting point.
What is meant by the term hardness?
The ability of a material to resist scratching or indentation by another body.
What is meant by the term ductility?
Retain strength and freedom from cracks when it’s shape is altered through tension.
What is meant by the term elasticity?
To deform under and return to its original shape and size when the load Is removed.
What is meant by the term shear strength?
The ability of a material to withstand offset loads
What is meant by the term fatigue?
When a material that can usually cope with a specific stress put upon it reaches a point through multiple repetition of that stress
What is meant by the term corrosive resistance?
Ability of a material to withstand chemical attack.
What is meant by the term conductivity?
Ability to allow the passage of electricity, heat, sound or light
What is meant by the term static testing?
Ability to test a material without the need to alter the shape or dynamics of the material.
What is meant by the term dynamic testing?
Requires the material to be subject to a physical load that deforms the material
What is meant by the term electrical test?
Passing electricity through a material to see resistance
What is meant by the term chemical test?
Placed in contact with a chemical to see if it reacts
What is meant by the term destructive testing?
Testing a material to the breaking point
What is meant by the term non - destructive testing?
Testing that does not result in permanent break.
