Material Selection Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is material selection?
The properties of materials need to be considered when designing a product
E.g. a steel handle on a cooking pan would conduct too much heat and burn the user
What is absorbency( selection criteria when picking a product)?
The ability to soak up water, light or heat
Good products: cotton and paper
Bad products: polystyrene
What is density?
How solid a material is
Equation: density= mass/ volume
Dense: lead and oak
What is fusibility?
The ability of a material of a material being heated and joined together
Example: weld metal
What is an electric conductor?
The ability to conduct electricity
Eg; copper wiring
What is thermal conductivity?
The ability to conduct heat
Eg: steel
What are other considerations to material selection?
Malleability= how easy to bend eg steel
Toughness= material hard to break or snap eg Kevlar
Strength= the ability of a material to withstand compression and tension eg diamond
Hardness= the ability to withstand impact without damage eg oak
Elasticity= something that can be stretched and return to its original state eg elastane in swimming trunks
Ductilibility= materials that can be stretched eg copper
What is paper made from?
Wood pulp
What are bleed proof physical and working properties?
Physical properties- white can be textured and thin
Working properties- coated to stop colour seeping, ink stays bright on the surface
What are cartridge paper physical and working properties?
Physical- thick,textured and rough
Working- expensive and opaque
What are grid paper physical and working properties?
Physical- white paper printed with a variety of grids
Working- lines are usually blue but can be darker to trace through
What are layout paper physical and working properties?
Physical- smooth of finish and translucent
Working- takes most media well
What are tracing paper physical and working properties?
Physical- translucent and smooth
Working- shiny
How is card formed?
In the same way as paper but just thicker
What are corrugated card physical and working properties?
Physical- paper bounded on the outside
Working- strong and protective
What is board made from?
Much thicker than paper and card and are typically heavier than 220 gsm
What are polypropylene physical and working properties?
Physical- thin plastic sheet in a range of colours
Working- strong and flexible and excellent resistance
What are duplex board physical and working properties?
Physical- two layers of card are bonded together
Working- stiff and lightweight
What are inkjet card physical and working properties?
Physical- bright white and smooth on both sides
Working- deep colours as the photographic ink sits on the surface
What is laminated layers?
Paper based boards
What are foil based packaging physical and working properties?
Physical- consists of paper based board layer and thin Aluminium foil
Working- easily printed and thin aluminium foil ensures food freshness
