Materials Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is strength?
The ability to withstand an applied load without failure or permanent deformation
What is hardness?
The resistance to deformation, indentation and scratches
What is toughness?
The resistance to fracture under stress and absorption of energy without deformation
What is malleability?
The ability to be hammered, pressed or rolled into sheets without breaking
What is elasticity?
The ability to be stretched by a tensile force
What is the brittleness?
A material’s tendency to facture easily under stress with no deformation
What is deterioration?
The gradual decline of a material’s properties due to factors such as environmental conditions, chemical reactions and physical stress
What is conductivity?
Thermal: The ability to conduct heat
Electrical: The ability to conduct electricity
What is ductility?
The ability to be drawn or stretched into wire or other thin forms without breaking
What is viscosity?
The measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow
What does the SAE number tell about the oil’s viscosity?
Shows how easy the oil flows at different temperatures
E.g. 5W - 20
5 represents viscosity at low temperatures, W stands for winter. A lower number means oil flows more easily at low temperatures
20 represents viscosity at high temperatures. A high number means oil flows less easily at high temperatures.
