How do you calculate the percentage of participants who spoke more after the energy drink?
Number of participants who spoke more after energy drink / total number of participants X 100
Example: 6/10 x 100 = 60%
What is the first step to convert a percentage to a decimal?
Remove the % sign
After removing, move the decimal point 2 places to the left.
Convert 60% to a decimal.
0.60
60% becomes 60.0 which is 0.60.
How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?
Work out the number of decimal places, then divide by 10
Example: 0.6 has 1 decimal place, so the fraction is 6/10.
What is the highest common factor used to reduce the fraction 6/10?
2
Dividing both parts of the fraction by 2 gives 3/5.
What is the ratio of participants who spoke more words in the energy drink condition?
6:10
This can be reduced to 3:5.
What does the term ‘estimates’ refer to in calculations?
Produces ballpark figures (approximation)
Useful for providing a broad idea of what the results will be.
How can significant figures affect the estimation of a number?
We might round off to the nearest thousand or million
Example: 432,765 to 2 significant figures is 430,000.
What is standard form?
Shorthand used to express very large or very small numbers
Formula: (Number between 1 and 10) x 10 (to the power of x).
What is the mantissa in standard form?
The number between 1 and 10
Example: In 3.2 x 10(5), 3.2 is the mantissa.
What is the exponent in standard form?
The power of 10
Example: In 3.2 x 10(5), 5 is the exponent.
How would you express 320,000 in standard form?
3.2 x 10(5)
Move the decimal point 5 places to the right.
Convert 0.000032 to standard form.
3.2 x 10(-5)
Move the decimal point 5 places to the left.
What are Order of Magnitude calculations?
Another kind of estimate using standard form
Compares the exponents to determine relative size.
True or False: The biggest number that divides into both parts of a fraction is called the highest common factor.
True
It is used to simplify fractions.
