matter Flashcards
(26 cards)
Alkali metals
The elements in the left column of the periodic table. They are very reactive.
Atom
The smallest part of an element that can exist
Carbonate
A compound that includes carbon and oxygen atoms.
Chemical formulae
A formula that shows the elements present in a compound and their relevant proportions.
Chemical properties
Features of the way a substance reacts with other substances.
Chemical symbol
A one or two letter code for an element. This always starts with a capital letter
Compound
Pure substances made of more than one type of atom joined together.
Elements
Pure substance containing only one atom type
Group
A column of the periodic table. They have similar properties.
Group 0
The far right column on the periodic table containing not very reactive gases. Also called the Noble gases
Group 1
Left column of the periodic table. Very reactive metals. Also called the alkali metals.
Group 7
Very reactive non- metals. Also called the halogens.
Halogen
The name for the very reactive non metals in group 7 that can carry out displacement reactions.
Hydroxide
A compound containing hydrogen and oxygen.
Molecule
More than one atom joined together.
Natural polymer
Lots of repetitive chemical units joined together. These occur naturally in nature like DNA and starch.
Nitrate (chemistry)
A compound containing nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen.
Noble gases
Group 0 elements. Not very reactive gases.
Period
Rows in the periodic table. There are trends in the periodic table as you go along periods.
Periodic table
A table of known elements grouped due to their properties.
Physical properties
Properties which can be observed without any change to the substance itself. For example, boiling point doesn’t actually change the substance, just it’s state.
Polymer
A molecule made of lots of smaller molecules joined together in repetitive units.
Sulfate
A molecule containing sulfur and oxygen.
synthetic polymer
A polymer made in a lab/ factory. Plastics are synthetic polymers
