Matter Flashcards
(18 cards)
Anything that has mass and volume and takes up space
Matter
A matter that has definite (fixed shape/volume) shape that is not free-flowing
Solid
A matter that conforms to the shape of the container it is in (fixed volume/no fixed shape)
Liquid
A matter that occupies the whole space of a container and its particles are distant from each other.
Gas
The actual, non-chemical, aspect of matter, its chemical composition is unchanged
Physical
The elements which the matter is made of, its composition changes entirely
Chemical
2 or more substances made up of different compounds
Mixtures
A type of mixture that is a singular identifiabe characteristic, Distributed evenly
Homogenous Mixture
A type of mixture that has a multiple identifiable characteristic. Unevenly distributed
Heterogeneous Mixture
Substances with fixed chemical composition. Can’t be seperated into other materials by any physical process.
Pure Substances
A type of pure substance that can’t be broken down by physical/chemical. Composed of identical one type of atom.
Element
Two or more elements bonded together. Difference types of atoms. 1 molecule
Compounds
Formed when 1 substance dissolves in another. Cannot be easily seperated. Physical properties of a substance change
Solutions
- Soluble: dissolves in water
- Insoluble: doesn’t dissolve
Basic chemical unit of an element. Smallest part of a substance. Cannot be broken down chemically (ellectrically neutral) nucleus (protons + & neutrons) and electrons ( -)
Atom
The lose or gain of electrons. Different number of protons, electrons, and neutrons that results to the charges having no balance.
Ion
- Cations: + ions (loses electrons)
- Anions: - ions (gains electrons)
What is called to the total number of Protons and electrons of an element?
Atomic Number
What is called to the total number of neutrons and protons of an element?
Mass Number
What is the structure of an Atom?
