Cardiogenic Shock
Causes:
-Inadequate heart function
-Disease of muscle tissue
-Impaired electrical system
-Disease or injury
Signs and Symptoms:
-Chest pain, Irregular pulse, Weak pulse, Low blood pressure, Cyanosis, Cool, clammy skin, Anxiety, Crackles (rales), Pulmonary edema
Obstructive Shock
Causes:
-Mechanical obstruction of heart caused by:
–Tension pneumothorax
–Cardiac tamponade
–Pulmonary embolism
Signs and Symptoms:
-Dyspnea, Rapid/weak pulse, Rapid/shallow breaths, Decreased lung compliance, Unilateral/Decreased/Absent lung sounds, Decreased blood pressure, Jugular vein distension, Subcutaneous emphysema, Cyanosis, Tracheal deviation
Septic Shock
Causes:
-Severe Infection
Signs and Symptoms:
-Warm skin or fever, Tachycardia, Low blood pressure
Neurogenic Shock
Causes:
-Damaged cervical spine
Signs and Symptoms:
-Bradycardia, Low blood pressure, Signs of neck injury
Anaphylactic Shock
Causes:
-Extreme, life threatening allergic reaction
Signs and Symptoms:
-Can develop within seconds, Mild itching or rash, Burning skin, Vascular dilation, Generalized edema, Coma, Rapid death
Psychogenic Shock
Causes:
-Temporary, generalized vascular dilation
–Anxiety, bad news, sight of injury or blood, prospect of medical treatment, severe pain, illness, tiredness
Signs and Symptoms:
-Rapid pulse, Normal or low blood pressure
Hypovolemic Shock
Causes:
-Loss of blood or fluid
Signs and Symptoms:
-Rapid/weak pulse, Low blood pressure, Change in mental status, Cyanosis, Cool/clammy skin, Increased respiratory rate
Appendicitis
Localization of Pain:
Right lower quadrant (direct); around the navel (referred); rebound tenderness (pain felt on the rebound after palpation)
Signs and Symptoms:
Nausea, Vomiting, Anorexia, Fever, Chills
Severe: Abscess, Peritonitis, Shock
Cholecystitis
Localization of Pain:
Right upper quadrant (direct); right shoulder (referred)
Signs and Symptoms:
Nausea, Vomiting, Indigestion, Bloating, Gas, Belching
Onset:
30 min after a fatty meal, usually at night
Ulcer
Localization of Pain:
Upper midabdomen or upper part of back
Signs and Symptoms:
Common - Nausea, Vomiting, Belching, Heartburn
Severe - Hematemesis, Melena, Peritonitis, Acute abdomen
Onset:
Immediately after eating, subsides, then reemerges 2-3 hours later
Diverticulitis
Localization of Pain:
Lower left quadrant
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (ruptured or dissecting)
Localization of Pain:
Low part of back and lower quadrants
Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder)
Localization of Pain:
Lower midabdomen (retropubic)
Kidney infection
Localization of Pain:
Costovertebral angle
Kidney stone
Localization of Pain:
Right or left flank, radiating to genitalia
Pancreatitis
Localization of Pain:
Upper abdomen (both quadrants); back
Signs and Symptoms:
Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal distension, Tenderness
Onset:
Pain is worse after eating
Hernia
Localization of Pain:
Anywhere in the abdominal area
Peritonitis
Localization of Pain:
Diffuse abdominal pain area
Esophagitis
Signs and Symptoms:
Pain with swallowing, Feeling of an object stuck in throat, Heartburn, Nausea, Vomiting, Sores in mouth,
