Ethinyl Estradiol / Norgestimate
Brand: Ortho Tri-Cyclen / Tri-Sprintec / Tri-ViLibra
Strengths:
- 0.035 mg / 0.18 mg
- 0.035 mg / 0.215 mg
- 0.035 mg / 0.25 mg
Frequency: one 1st phase tablet for 7 days, one 2nd phase tablet for 7 days, one 3rd phase tablet for 7 days, one inactive tablet for 7 days
Indications:
- Oral contraceptive
- acne
Non-FDA Indication:
- regulation of menstrual cycle
- lessen menstrual flow
- reduce painful menses
Claim to Fame: tri phasics mimic menstrual cycle
Side Effects: water retention, upset stomach, nausea, headache
Miss a dose?
- take ASAP or with next days dose
Tips:
- increases CV risk
- not recommended for those +35 years old, smoker, history of blood clot
- take at same time each day
- if OC is not started day 1 of menses, use other form for first week
- anti-convulsant can decreased effectiveness, increase seizures
- do not protect against STD

Frequency: take 1 active tablet daily for 21 days, then take 1 iron tablet for 7 days
Indications:
- Oral contraceptive
- acne
Non-FDA Indication:

Frequency: apply 1 new patch each week for 3 weeks, no patch 4th week
Indication:
- contraception
Side Effects: water retention, upset stomach, nausea, headache
Tips:
- increased CV risk
- not recommended for those 35+, smoker, history of blood clot
- do not protect against STD
- adhesive may cause skin rash –> rotate sites
- DO NOT CUT PATCH
- apply to butt, torso, stomach, upper arm
Ethinyl Estradiol / Etonogestrel
Brand: NuvaRing
Strength: 0.015mg / 0.12 mg
Frequency: insert 1 ring into vagina on or before day 5 of cycle and leave in for 3 weeks, remove on week 4
Indication:
- contraception
Side Effects: water retention, upset stomach, nausea, headache
Tips:
- increases CV risk
- not recommended for those +35 years old, smoker, history of blood clot
- do not protect against STD
- if ring falls out, rinse with cool water and reinsert within 3 hours
- DO NOT REMOVE BEFORE INTERCOURSE
Medroxyprogesterone
Brand: depo-provera
Strength: 150mg/ml
Frequency: 150 mg IM injection into gluteal or deltoid every 3 months
Indications:
- contraception
- endometriosis pain
- abnormal uterine bleeding
- amenorrhea
Claim to Fame: no estrogen
Tips:
- causes nervousness
- must be administered by HC professional
- DO NOT USE LONGER THAN 2 years –> bone loss
- may cause spotty or missed menses
Levonorgestrel (OTC)
Brand: Plan B, One Step, EContra One Step
Strength: 1.5 mg
Frequency: 1 tablet ASAP with 72 hours after unprotected sex
Indications:
- emergency post-coital contraception
Tips:
- can cause fatigue
- no interaction with antibiotics
- will not terminate existing pregnancy
Clonazepam
Brand: Klonopin
Strength: 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg
Frequency: qd, bid, tid, qid
Indications:
- panic disorder
- seizure
- anxiety (off label)
Tips:
- can cause drowsiness, fatigue, ataxia, behavioral problems
Alprazolam
Brand: Xanax
Strength: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg
Frequency: bid, tid, or prn
Indications:
- panic disorder
- anxiety
Tips:
- can cause drowsiness, confusion
- do not stop suddenly
- alcohol can cause worsen drowsiness
Cyclobenzaprine
Brand: Flexeril
Strength: 5mg, 10mg
Frequency: qd, tid, or prn
Indications:
- muscle spasm
Tips:
- can cause drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth
