Local Side Effect
Occur at the location on the body where the drug has touched
Systemic Side Effect
- Affecting all body systems, tissue, or organs
- affect the body internally
(ex. hypertension, edema, hyperglycemia [increased blood sugar])
Adverse Reaction
You know its gonna happen but when its in the extreme is a adverse reaction
Ex. ( excessive bleeding in a resident taking anticoagulant medication [prevents blood from clotting] )
Idiosyncratic Drug Reaction
Reaction that cannot be predicted & is not related to the known effects of the drug
Ex. Allergic Reaction
Allergic Reaction
- Also known as hypersensitivity
- immune system overreacts to a substance that would not normally cause an immune response
Paradoxical Reaction
- Drug causes the opposite effect of what is expected
- rare
Ex. taking Benzodiazepines to treat anxiety to calm patient but makes them react with excitement or hostility
Drug Tolerance
when a patient no longer receives the same effect from the same dose of medication
Interactions
Prescription or over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, food, & illness can all interact with a medication
