Media effects models Flashcards
(7 cards)
What does the hypodermic syringe model theorise?
Implies that mass media has a direct, immediate, + powerful effect on its audiences + that audiences are passive
Media can influence large group directly by ‘injecting’ them with appropriate msgs designed to trigger desired response
What is an example of the hypodermic syringe model?
Propaganda, fake news
Powerful + direct flow of info from sender to receiver, who is powerless to resist the impact of the msg
What are the limitations of the hypodermic syringe model?
Based entirely on idea that audiences are passive media + they’re not active which isnt what more contemporary media theories suggest
What does the social learning theory theorise?
Emphasises importance of observing, modelling, + imitating behaviours, attitudes, + emotional reactions of others
What did the bobo doll experiment for SLT conclude?
That children are able to learn social behaviour, such as aggression, through the process of watching behaviour of another oerson
Therefore behaviour shown through media is likely to be imitated by its audience
What are limitations of the social learning theory?
-Bandura’s ideas developed through child behaviour in lab settings; unnatural environment has impact on behaviour
- Children imitate adults so expected that they would hit the doll, but doll isnt real person so doesnt prove they’d hit someone irl
- Children aged 3-5, + children dont develop reason until 7
- No records of childrens backgrounds, cant take nurture into account
