What is the mainstream audience?
Describes whats viewed by most people in a society as normal
Consume mainstream media
What is the niche audience?
A segment of the mass audience, focuses on a specific market + product
What is the primary audience?
Main audience with direct interest in product
What is the secondary audience?
Product not made for them, but may engage due to family, friends, etc
What is the tertiary audience?
Interested in product due to something associated with it, e.g. celebrity
What is valuable for constructing audiences?
Genre, attracts audiences
However, audiences arent always predictable in their tastes, product hit can be challenging
What are GEARS?
Helps producers to define parts of the mainstream audience or niche audience to use appropriate codes to construct texts + engage audience in preferred reading
What does GEARS stand for?
Gender
Ethnicity
Age
Regional/national identity
Socio economic status
What are psychometrics/psychographics?
Identifying audiences using categories based on values, personality, opinions, attitudes, + lifestyle
Based around VALS - Values, attitudes, lifestyle = this type of research is used in marketing media products
What are the 7 parts of the UK VALS framework?
Resigned, struggler, mainstreamer, aspirer, succeeder, explorer, reformer
Why are psychometrics important?
- Can make more specific adverts aimed at audiences
- Allows you to predict size of audience for specific products, can predict popularity
- People more likely to buy things they associate with
