Q

What is Curran and Seaton’s theory?

A

Media industries are all about profit and power and the way media companies are owned and structured in the way industries are run.

  • There are only a few powerful companies.
  • These companies dominate the industry.
  • These companies only care about PROFIT/POWER.
  • Products are made for as little money as possible - or with a view to generate as much money as possible.
  • This makes us feel as though there is lots of choice when actually there are just multiple products offering the same thing.
  • There is no real originality.
  • There are less opportunities for independent producers because of the powerful companies flooding the market.
