Medical Terms Flashcards
double-blind study
Subjects are randomly assigned to different treatment groups. Neither investigator or subject knows if they are receiving the experimental or control treatment.
reliability
how well a test can be reproduced with results similar to the original test
meta-analysis
pooling results from several previous studies to achieve greater statistical power. data is acquired from previous studies
case-control study
observational study, samples chosen based on presence/absence of disease
cohort study
observational study, samples based on presence/absence of risk factors and subjects followed over a period of time
clinical trial
experimental study, compares therepeutic benefit of 2 or more treatments
prevalence
proportion of individuals in a population with a disease
incidence
number of new cases diagnosed over a specified time interval
sensitivity
probabilty that a person with a disease will be correctly identified
specificity
probabilty that a person will be correctly diagnosed for not having a disease
Positive Predictive Value (PPV)
probability that an individual who tests positive actually has a disease
Negative Predictive Value (NPV)
probability that a subject will not have a disease and the test result is negative
