Medication Administration Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is Pharmacokinetics?
the study of the absorption, metabolism, and excretion of the drugs to determine the relationship between the dose of a drug and the drugs’ concentrations in biological fluids
What is bioavailability?
Readiness to produce a drug effect
What is absorption?
passage of a drug from the site of administration into the bloodstream, depend on several factors
What is dissolution?
is the rate at which a drug becomes a solution.
What is Distribution?
refers to the movement of drugs from the blood into various body fluids and tissues.
What is Metabolism?
biotransformation- the physical and chemical processing of the drug
What is excretion?
Process in which drugs are eliminated from the body
What is half-life?
the time it takes the body to eliminate half of the blood concentration level of the original drug dose
What is onset of action
the time it takes the body to respond to a drug after administration
What is peak plasma level?
Highest blood concentration of a single drug dose before the elimination rate equals the rate of absorption
What is trough?
lowest blood serum concentration of a drug in a person’s system
What is duration?
the time a drug remains in the system in a concentration great enough to have a therapeutic effect.
What is a Plateau?
blood concentration level is maintained
What is parenteral?
introduction of a medication by any route other than the oral gastrointestinal route
What is drug interaction?
the effect one drug can have on another
What is toxic effect?
occurs when the body cannot metabolize a drug, causes the drug to accumulate in the blood
What is an Idiosyncratic reaction?
highly unpredictable response that may be manifested by an over response, under response, or atypical response.
What is a unit dose form?
system of packaging and labeling each dose of medication by the pharmacy, often to supply a 24 hr time period.
What is Stock Supplied??
dispensed and labeled in large quantities
What is pharmacognosy?
the study of the biochemical aspects of natural products
What is aspiration?
inhalation of regurgitated gastric contents into pulmonary system
what is enteral instillation?
the delivery of drugs through gastrointestinal tube
What is patency?
openness
What is infiltration?
swelling and discomfort at the IV site
