What are the nursing actions when a patient refuses a medication?
- Provide education
- If refusal persist, notify provider of patient’s refusal
-Document patient refusal, education provided, and the provider who was notified

What is a high alert medication?
Medications that can cause serious harm if used incorrectly
Example of high alert meds
Heparin- risk for bleeding events
Insulin- can severely drop blood sugar
Opioids- can depress respirations
Potassium- can stop someone’s heart
What is the therapeutic effect vs adverse affect?
therapeutic- a drugs desired/intended effect
adverse effect- anything other than the desired effect
Synergistic drug compatibility vs
Antagonistic drug compatibility
synergistic-drugs that work together and INCREASE drug effects
antagonists- drugs that work together and decrease drug effects
