A
- Reasons a medication should not be taken, or should be taken with caution
- An MA does not determine whether a drug is contraindicated for a resident

A
- medication room must have separate storage areas for topical & oral medications
- medication rooms & carts must be locked any time they are not attended

Things Needed to be Performed before Administering Medication
A
- MA may be required to check vital signs before administering meds
- Failure to check BP before administering BP meds is a medication error
- Blood should be checked before administering blood thinners

A
- Facilities may have computer-based medication references available
- MAs should only use facility approved references
- Some facilities allow MAs to use mobile phones to access online references such as www.drugs.com

Boxed Warning
A
boxed warnings or black box warnings are notifications of serious & potentially life-threatening side effects or adverse effects related to a drug

Stock Medications
A
OTC medications kept on hand for PRN use, are stored separately from medications ordered for specific residents

Medication Disposal Situations
A
- Medications has expired
- medications has been contaminated or damaged
- resident develops allergic reaction or adverse reaction
- plan has changed, & the medication is no longer needed
- resident refuses medication after already being prepared

Medication Disposal Situation Pt.2
A
- medication is prepared but then must be held due to resident condition
- resident leaves the facility & will not return, or their return is uncertain
- a resident dies

Control Substance Disposal
A
- must be accounted for in the controlled substance count & in most cases 2 staff members must be involved in its disposal
- drugs that should be flushed down the toilet via FDA used fentanyl patches
- other drugs may be placed in special bags & discarded in the trash, returned to the pharmacy for disposal, or turned over to drug safety program
