What does NSAID mean?
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
76
Methylprednisolone
INFLAMMATION CORTICOSTEROID Indication: Action: Adverse reactions: Nursing Considerations:
77
What does SABA stand for?
Short acting beta agonist
78
What does LABA stand for?
Long acting beta agonist
79
What does ICS stand for?
Inhaled corticosteroids
80
What does BCG stand for?
Bacillus Calmette-Guerin
81
What does the ACE stand for in ACE inhibitor?
Angiotensin converting enzyme
82
What does COX1 & COX 2 inhibitor mean and how do they work?
Cyclo-oxygenase 1 & 2 inhibitors They inhibit the COX enzymes from producing prostaglandins, therefore reducing the inflammatory response in the body
83
What is the difference between COX 1 & COX 2 inhibitors?
COX 1 enzyme produces prostaglandins that activate platelets and protect the stomach lining whereas COX 2 enzymes do not. They both facilitate the inflammatory response.
84
What are the direct effects of COX 1 & 2 inhibition?
inhibition of COX‑1 results in impaired gastric cytoprotection and antiplatelet effects inhibition of COX‑2 results in anti-inflammatory and analgesic action reduction in glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow occurs with both COX‑1 and COX‑2 inhibition.
85
What are the adverse effects of NSAIDs?
nausea, dyspepsia, GI ulceration or bleeding, raised liver enzymes (especially diclofenac), diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, salt and fluid retention, hypertension
86
How do corticosteroids work?
They inhibit gene expression that controls the release of proinflammatory mediators and elements of the uimmune response.
