Antipsychotics (Schizophrenia & Mania)
Medications: Haldol, Risperdal, Thorazine
May cause: Tardive Dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements).
Other Medications: Thorazine, Mellaril, Stelazine, Haldol, Prolixin, Navane, Trilafon, Orap.
Phenothiazines: Largest class of neuroleptic antipsychotic drugs.
Atypical Antipsychotics: Clozaril, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Abilify, Seroquel, Fanapt, Fanapta, Loxitane, Invega, Latuda.
Mood Stabilizers (Bipolar Disorder)
Medications: Lithium, Tegretol, Depakote
Lithium: May cause kidney problems.
Tegretol, Depakote: May cause liver problems (requires frequent blood work).
Other Medications: Eskalith, Lithobid, Depakote, Lamictal, Neurontin, Topamax, Tegretol, Tripletal, Zyprexa, Geodon, Symbyax.
Anti-Anxiety Medications
Benzodiazepines: Valium, Klonopin, Xanax, Librium, Ativan
(medications ending in “pam” are most likely antianxiety)
Benzodiazepines: Used to treat anxiety disorders.
Other Medications: Librium, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Dalmane, Tranxene, Serax, Buspar.
Beta Blockers: Lopressor, Inderal (used for anxiety symptoms).
Antihistamines: Benadryl, Vistaril (used for anxiety relief).
Stimulants (ADHD)
Medications: Amphetamines, Concerta, Adderall, Ritalin
Amphetamines: Used for ADHD treatment (e.g., Concerta, Adderall, Ritalin).
Non-Amphetamines: Strattera.

Antidepressants (Depression & OCD)
SSRIs: Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil
(ending in “pram” are most likely antidepressants)
SSRIs: Common antidepressants used to treat depression (e.g., Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil).
Atypical Antidepressants: Wellbutrin, Effexor, Cymbalta.
Tricyclics: Elavil, Tofranil.
MAOIs: Nardil, Parnate, Marplan, Emsam.
Dietary Restrictions for MAOIs: Avoid beer, cheese, chocolate, etc.
MAOIs Dietary Restrictions
Medications: Nardil, Parnate, Marplan, Emsam
MAOIs: Must avoid certain foods (beer, cheese, chocolate) due to risk of hypertensive crisis.
Mnemonic: “MAO” sounds like “meow”—pussycats can’t eat beer, cheese, or chocolate.
Dietary Restrictions: Alcohol, aged cheese, fermented foods, chocolate.
Alcohol Abuse/Use Medications
Medications: Naltrexone, Benzodiazepines
Naltrexone: Decreases cravings for alcohol.
Benzodiazepines: Commonly used for detoxifying patients and managing alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS)
