Meiosis Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is the aim of meiosis?
Is to produce sex cells
Diploid
A non-sex cell containing the total number of chromosomes
Haploid
A sex cell that contains half the number of chromosomes
Fertilization
It is where sperm and ovum meets
Zygote
A cell formed after fertilization and develops into a baby
What happens after fertilization?
A zygote is formed, and it grows by mitosis
What kind of division does meiosis 2 have?
Equational it conserves the number of chromosomes
Prophase1
1) the disappearance of nuclear membrane
2) formation of spindle fibers
3) pairing of homologous chromosomes
Metaphase1
Homologous chromosomes line up in the center of the cell
Anaphase 1
Separation of homologous chromosomes
Telophase 1
Two nuclei are formed, and the number of chromosomes are reduced into half
How many chromatids in all meiosis 1 does it have?
2 chromatids in all phases of meiosis 1
Prophase2
1) the disappearance of nuclear membrane
2) formation of spindle fibers
Metaphase 2
Chromosomes lineup in the center of the cell
Anaphase 2
The separation of sister chromatids
Telophase 2
4 nuclei are formed, each contain half the number of chromosomes
Difference between meiosis and mitosis
Mitosis : number of divisions in one cycle is 1
: Number produced at the end is. 2
: Number of chromosomes: conserved
: Function is to heal injuries and growth
Meiosis. : number of divisions in one cycle is 2
: Numbers produce at the end is. 4
: Number of chromosomes is. Reduced
: Function is to produce sex cells
How many chromosomes does sperm ovum and zygote have?
Sperm : 23. Ovum : 23. Zygote : 46 (humans)
Sperm and ovum have half the number of chromosomes and can’t be divided, but does zygote It has the total number of chromosomes and can be divided. Zygote = sperm + ovum
What happens at the end of meiosis?
The number of chromosomes reduces into half
How many cells are produced at the end of meiosis
4
2 phases of meiosis
Meiosis 1. Meiosis 2
NOTE
Interphase ~> meiosis 1 ~> meiosis 2 ~> cytokinesis ~> fertilization
How many chromatids are in meiosis2
Prophase metaphase anaphase telophase all have 2 chromatids ?
Anaphase 1 telophase 1
Half the number of chromosomes
