Meiosis- Intro and Importance Flashcards

1
Q

What is meiosis?
-diploid vs haploid numbers

A

the process by which sex cells (gametes) are formed. the diploid chromosome is reduced to form haploid gametes. (2n becomes n)
Diploid is 2n=46
Haploid is n=23

Q
  1. Sexual repro. ensures what? And it increases what?
-in humans, how many chromosomes from mom and dad
    -what are paired chromosomes
    -how is appearance determined
A

Ensures a recombination of genes (maternal and paternal chromosmes united in zyote) AND increases genetic diversity
-paired chromosomes are homologus (similar size shape, centromere location, gene arrangement)
-by how genes on the homologus chromosomes interact
