Q
What did Tulving do?
A
1985
He suggested there are 3 long term memory stores containing different types of information:
* Episodic memory
* Semantic memory
* Procedural memory
2
Q
Explain episodic memory
A
- Long term store for personal events/experiences that have happened in your life
- Includes memories of when the events occured, they’re time stamped, and of people, places and objects involved to produce a single memory
- Have to make a concious effort to recall memory episodes and you are aware you’re searching your memory for a particular episode
3
Q
Explain semantic memory
A
- Long term store for facts or general knowledge
- Includes facts and our knowledge of what words and concepts mean
- Memories are not time stamped and these memories are less personal and the semantic memory is constantly being added to
- Memories need to be recalled deliberately and we are conciously aware of them
4
Q
Explain procedural memory
A
- Long term store for motor skills/actions
- Includes memories of learnt skills
- Recall these memories without making a concious or deliberate effort
- They are the skills we’d find hard to explain to someone
- These memories aren’t time stamped
