What does ‘Virtus’ mean?
‘Courage’ or ‘virtue’. Defining concept in life of Roman man.
What does ‘oikos’ mean?
The ancient Greek household: includes family, slaves and property possessions.
What was the cursus honorum?
System of political offices in Roman senate, elected annually.
What does ‘pudicitia’ mean?
‘Chastity’ or ‘sexual modesty’. Ideal quality of Roman women, especially upper class.
What is a stola?
Typical dress worn by Roman woman.
What does ‘kyrios’ mean?
The head of ancient Greek oikos. Responsible for women, children and unmarried female relatives in oikos.
What does ‘paterfamilias’ mean?
The male head of Roman household. Father then son.
What was the patria postestas?
The legal power a paterfamilias had over members of his family.
What does ‘manus’ mean?
‘Power’. Legal power wielded by husband over a wife.
What does ‘cum manu’ mean?
‘With power’. Marriage where husband gained manus over his wife.
What does ‘sine manu’ mean?
‘Without power’. Marriage where husband did not gain manus over his wife and she remained under patria potestas.
What were the Julian laws?
Laws introduced by a member of the Julian family (first five emperors).
What does ‘erastes’ mean? (pl. erastai)
The adult in a pederastic relationship.
What does ‘eromenos’ mean? (pl. eromenoi)
The boy in a pederastic relationship.
What was the gymnasium? (pl. gymnasia)
Area where men would meet to exercise naked.
What was a symposium? (pl. symposia)
A party with only male guests (not including slaves.) There would be a feast, drinking and discussions.
What was the andron?
A room on the ground floor of a Greek house. Only used by kyrios and guests at symposium. Couches around the walls.
What does ‘infamis’ mean? (pl. infames)
A person that had no legal standing in Roman society because of their profession or conduct. Prostitutes, actors, gladiators and slaves.
