Mendel and predictions Flashcards
(11 cards)
How did Mendel set up his genetic experiments?
He used pea plants and would cut off the male reproductive parts, so they couldn’t breed by themselves, and then would pollinate the female parts with any substance he wanted.
What were the generations?
P (Parental), F1, and F2
What did Mendel always start with?
true breeding plants- they will produce offspring with same traits as the parent.
what ratios did he consistently see in the F1 and F2?
F1- all were heterozygous, 4:0
F2- 3:1
Explain how a test cross works
You cross the homozygous dominant individual with a homozygous recessive individual to see what the results would be.
Predict genotypic and phenotypic ratios for a trait with a dominant and recessive pattern
genotypic- 1/4:2/4:1/4
phenotypic- 3/4:1/4
Predict genotypic and phenotypic ratios for a trait that is codominant
if the parents are true-breeding:
genotypic - F1-4:0 F2: 1:2:2 phenotypic- F1-4:0 F2-3:1
Predict genotypic and phenotypic ratios for a trait that has multiple alleles
It is much more complex to predict the ratios with more than one allele.
If the offspring is 0/4 FF: 2/4Ff :2/4 ff, what are the parent genotypes?
Ff and ff
