What are the three different types of ethics?
- Meta ethics
- Normative ethics
- Applied ethics
What are the difference between cognitivism and non-cognitivism?
Cognitivism = moral statements are subject to being either true of false (meaningful)
Non-cognitivism = moral statements are NOT subject to true or falsity (meaningless)
What are the three approaches to meta ethics?
Naturalism, Intuitionism and Emotivism
What is naturalism?
Moral values can be correctly defined by observation of the natural world.
The good is what is natural.
What is intuitionism?
Moral truths are indefinable and self-evident. The ‘good’ cannot be defined, it is intuitively known.
The good is a simple notion that is known by intuition.
What is emotivism?
Moral statement are not statements of fact, but are indicators of emotional states/ personal opinions.
The good is a subjective matter of personal opinion/ expression of an emotion.
What is the difference between moral realism and moral anti-realism?
Moral realism = discovery
Moral anti-realism = decide for ourselves
What is G.E. Moore’s naturalistic fallacy?
The idea that what is natural isn’t what is good.
Who scholars believe naturalism? How/ why?
