Metabolic Acidosis vs. Metabolic Alkalosis (R3) Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
Metabolic Acidosis
Pathophysiology
A
- Kidney problem
- Too much hydrogen; Too little HCO3 - Lungs compensate
- Lungs will blow off CO2
2
Q
Metabolic Acidosis
Causes
A
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- not enough insulin = ↑fat metabolism = excess ketones (acid) - Acute/Chronic kidney injury
- Malnutrition
- breaking down of fats = excess ketones (acid) - Severe diarrhea
3
Q
Metabolic Acidosis
Signs and Symptoms
A
- ↑RR
- Confusion
- Hyperkalemia
- muscle twitching
- weakness
- arrhythmias
4
Q
Metabolic Alkalosis
Pathophysiology
A
- Kidney problem
- too much HCO3; Too little hydrogen - Lungs compensate
- lungs will retain CO2
5
Q
Metabolic Alkalosis
Causes
A
- Too much antacids
- too much sodium bicarbonate (acid) - Diuretics
- Hyperaldosteronism
- Excess vomiting
- excess loss of hydrochloric acid (HCL) from the stomach
6
Q
Metabolic Alkalosis
Signs and Symptoms
A
↓RR
↓K levels
- dysrhythmias
- muscle cramps/weakness
- vomiting
- tremors and tetany
- EKG changes
7
Q
If pH is out of range and CO2 or HCO3 is in range
A
Uncompensated
8
Q
If pH, CO2, and HCO3 are all out of range
A
Partially compensated
9
Q
If pH is normal
A
Fully compensated
