Metallic Bonding Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is a metallic bond?
A
The strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the positive metal ions and the sea of delocalised electrons.
2
Q
Why do metals have high melting and boiling points?
A
- It has a giant lattice structure
- There are strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the positive metal ions and the negative delocalised electrons within the metal lattice structure
- These require lots of energy to be broken
3
Q
Why can metals conduct electricity?
A
There are delocalised electrons available to move and carry charge through the structure.
4
Q
Why are metals malleable?
A
This is because the atoms/ions are arranged in layers which can slide over each other when a force is applied.
5
Q
Structure of Metals
A
- Positive Ions
- Arranged in layers
- A sea of delocalised electrons
